PARTICIPATION IN PHYSICAL ACTIVITY BEFORE AND AFTER COVID-19 PANDEMIC AMONG UNDERGRADUATES OF EBONYI STATE UNIVERSITY NIGERIA
Abstract
Background: Adolescents/youth participation in physical activity enhances healthy lifestyle and wellness. The aim of this study was to explore adolescents/youth participation in school physical activity before and after COVID-19 pandemic.
Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional survey research design was conducted from February to August 2023, among adolescents/youths of Ebonyi State University. The population comprised 13,917 registered undergraduates. The sample size of 389 undergraduates was recruited. A semi structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The data was analyzed using frequencies, percentages, mean and standard deviation. The results shows the mean of ( = 2.6) undergraduates participation in physical activity before the outbreak of COVID-19, whereas ( = 1.4) participate after COVID-19. The mean differences shows as serious decline in physical activity participation after COVID-19. The study further revealed reasons for physical activity participation before COVID-19 (58.8%), and after COVID-19 (42.2%). Moreover, the most common reasons for serious decline in physical activity after COVID-19 was fear of unknown (60.3%).
Conclusions: The study concluded that the WHO guidelines on COVID-19 preventive protocols should be strictly followed during physical activities to prevent fear of unknown among the students.
