Knowledge, Facilities and Equipment, and Leader Role Associations with Nurses' Adherence to Patient Safety Protocols at Regional Public Hospital Dr. M. Thomsen Nias
Abstract
The number of patient safety incidents in hospitals reported in Indonesia is still quite high. Therefore, to reduce these incidents, nurses, as one of the health care providers, must adhere to patient safety protocols. Regional Public Hospital Dr. M. Thomsen Nias reported an increase in patient safety incidents in 2022 caused by nurse non-adherence to patient safety protocols. This study aims to determine the association of knowledge, facilities and equipment, and leader roles with nurses' adherence to patient safety protocols at Regional Public Hospital Dr. M. Thomsen Nias. This cross-sectional study involved 132 nurses in hospital inpatient wards selected by proportional random sampling. Data analysis using the chi-square test. The results showed that only 6.8% of nurses were adherent to patient safety protocols. The availability of patient safety facilities and equipment (61.4%) and the head of the inpatient ward's role as a leader (65.2%) were moderate, but most nurses still had poor knowledge (62.1%) about patient safety practices. Facilities and equipment (p=0.261) and the head of the inpatient ward’s leadership role (p=0.009) were associated with nurses' adherence to patient safety protocols, but knowledge (p=0.030) was not significantly associated with nurses' adherence to patient safety protocols. The management of Regional Public Hospital Dr. M. Thomsen Nias should focus on monitoring nurses' adherence to patient safety protocols, ensuring the availability of patient safety facilities and equipment in each inpatient ward, providing leadership training for heads of inpatient wards, and conducting regular training programs to improve nurses’ knowledge of patient safety practices.
